Baathist Syria had played a major role in Lebanon, intervening in the country's civil war, occupying the country in the post-war period, and manipulating Lebanon's political landscape to benefit its political and economic interests. Though it was ousted from the country in 2005 following a mass uprising that blamed Damascus for the assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik al-Hariri, the Syrian regime continued to maintain influence in the country through its allies and supporters.

Maelyn Jarmon from Texas won Season 16 of "The Voice" on Tuesday, delivering a victory to the team led by the show's new coach John Legend.
Gyth Rigdon of DeRidder, Louisiana, ended up as first runner-up.
"Maelyn, I'm just so grateful I got to work with you all this time. You could have chosen any of us to coach you, and you chose me, and it's been such a wonderful, wonderful thrilling experience to work with you. Thank you,” Legend told Jarmon before the results were announced.
26-year-old Jarmon, who is deaf in one ear, earned a four-chair turn during the Blind Auditions, and was the first member to join Team Legend.
