U.S. President Joe Biden announced on Tuesday that Israel and Lebanon have reached an agreement, mediated by the United States, to bring an end to the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah.
"This has been the deadliest conflict between Israel and Hezbollah in decades," Biden said during remarks from the White House Rose Garden. "Israel did not launch this war. The Lebanese people did not seek that war either."
The president revealed that he had concluded calls with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati, during which both leaders informed him of their governments' acceptance of the agreement. Biden also expressed gratitude to French President Emmanuel Macron for his contributions to the negotiations.
The agreement, described by Biden as a "permanent cessation of hostilities," is set to take effect early Wednesday.
"At 4 a.m. tomorrow local time, the fighting across the Lebanese-Israeli border will end. Will end," he emphasized.
The president assured that the U.S., alongside partners like France, would ensure full implementation of the deal. He also clarified that the agreement upholds Israel’s right to self-defense under international law.
"Let me be clear, if Hezbollah or anyone else breaks the deal, and poses a direct threat to Israel, then Israel retains the right to self-defense consistent with international law," Biden stated.
Highlighting the broader implications, Biden underscored that the deal supports Lebanon’s sovereignty and aligns with its national interest. He added that the Lebanese people, like those in Gaza, deserve an end to violence and displacement.
"The people of Gaza have been through hell, their world is absolutely shattered," Biden said, reiterating that the only way for Hamas to end its conflict with Israel is by releasing hostages.
