The clashes that took place on the border between Syria and Lebanon this week were not the first of their kind. But the announcement of a ceasefire between the two countries following two days of deadly cross-border clashes had a different tone to it. Historically, the Lebanese Armed Forces have rarely shelled Syrian positions directly, even less those of the Syrian army. This time, the clashes were direct.

Broadcaster Fearne Cotton says she and her husband have separated after 10 years of marriage.
In a post on her Instagram story on Friday, the 43-year-old TV presenter and podcast host announced the split from Jesse Wood - the son of Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood.
"It is with a heavy heart that I let you all know that Jesse and I are ending our marriage," Cotton wrote in the post.
"Our priority has been, and will always be, our children.
"We please ask that you respect the privacy of our family at this time."
North London-born Cotton got her break as a children's TV presenter aged 15, later teaming up with her former CBBC co-star Reggie Yates to co-host Top Of The Pops from 2004 to 2006.
She joined BBC Radio One in 2005, again co-hosting with Yates for the Friday early morning programme and the Chart Show from 2007.
Cotton took on the weekday mid-morning slot in 2009, a role she held until 2015, before joining Radio Two.
She has also appeared on other shows including ITV's Celebrity Juice, alongside her friend Holly Willoughby, and has worked with charities such as Children In Need.
In an article for Red magazine, she revealed she met Woods, 48, a guitarist and model, in 2011 while on holiday in Ibiza with four friends.
In August 2012, Cotton announced she was pregnant with her and Woods's first child, before giving birth to a son in February 2013.
The pair married in London in August 2014, before announcing the birth of their daughter in September 2015.
Earlier this month, Cotton revealed she was undergoing an operation to remove two benign tumours from her jaw.
She wrote: "I've got a benign tumour just in my jaw here, below my ear, another little tiny one above it.
"I'm very grateful they're benign but they do need to come out because they're on a nerve.
"So I'm gonna have that surgery, and then I'm gonna be resting to get better before Christmas."
Last week, she said in an update that she had undergone the surgery and was "pretty wiped out" but back resting at home and "on the mend".
