Lebanon's judicial investigation into the Beirut Port explosion continued on Friday with former General Security Chief, Major General Abbas Ibrahim, undergoing a lengthy interrogation session before Judge Tarek Bitar. However, the session concluded without any legal action being taken against Ibrahim, who will remain under investigation for the time being.
Speaking to reporters as he left the courthouse, Ibrahim emphasized that his legal actions against Judge Bitar were not intended to obstruct the investigation but to bring attention to alleged violations by the investigative judge.
“I came to confirm that the lawsuit I filed against Judge Bitar was not intended to obstruct the probe, but to highlight the violations committed by the judicial investigator,” Ibrahim said.
Sources close to Ibrahim told MTV that the interrogation session was "calm and smooth, yet thorough," lasting more than two hours. They confirmed that Ibrahim was not subject to any new legal action or charges following the session.
Ibrahim had previously filed a lawsuit for judicial misconduct under Article 741, which allows for legal recourse against the state over the actions of judicial investigators. However, sources indicated that Judge Bitar chose not to accept the lawsuit, a development that has become a contentious issue in the investigation.
Former State Security Chief Tony Saliba was also scheduled to appear before Bitar on Friday, having arrived from abroad, according to MTV.
