A French judicial delegation is set to arrive in Lebanon on Monday as part of ongoing investigations into the devastating Beirut port explosion, a Lebanese judicial source told AFP.
The two Paris-based judges are expected to land in Beirut on Monday evening for a three-day mission. They are leading the French inquiry into the 2020 blast, which killed three French nationals and injured dozens more.
During their stay, the judges will meet with Lebanese judicial investigator Tarek Bitar and other judicial officials in a bid to exchange information and push forward both the Lebanese and French investigations into the explosion.
A key focus of the visit will be the formal handover of a detailed technical report compiled by French experts, the source said. The French team had traveled to Beirut the day after the blast, conducting extensive field inspections, collecting physical evidence, and surveying the widespread damage over a two-week period.
The source emphasized that the technical report is seen as crucial for addressing many of the outstanding questions that have hampered progress in the Lebanese probe.
The August 4, 2020, explosion, one of the largest non-nuclear blasts in history, ripped through Beirut, killing more than 220 people, wounding thousands, and leveling large sections of the capital.
