Lebanon’s government just did something that would have been unthinkable a year ago. Prime Minister Nawaf Salam’s Cabinet imposed a blanket ban on Hezbollah’s military and security activities last week, ordering the Lebanese Armed Forces to stop rocket launches and other attacks from Lebanese territory.

Both US and Israeli officials warned that the group had started to rebuild its military infrastructure right after the war ended in November 2024 with the ceasefire agreement. With its links to Iran intact, and its political/financial foundations protected, Hezbollah was able to rebuild some of its arsenal, reinstate part of its chain of command, and restore some of the cash it had lost.

Kataeb Party leader Samy Gemayel on Monday lashed out at Hezbollah Secretary-General Naim Qassem after he warned that the group would not stay neutral if Iran came under attack.
In a post on X, Gemayel delivered a blunt rebuke to Qassem’s remarks, which signaled Hezbollah’s readiness to join any regional confrontation involving Tehran.
“If you want to defend your supreme leader, go to him. If you want to commit suicide, do it on your own. Just leave Lebanon out of it!” Gemayel wrote.
