Gemayel Demands Swift Government Action on Fate of Missing Lebanese

In the wake of reports claiming that Syria's rebels have freed hundreds of prisoners from Hama's central prison after they entered the embattled city, Kataeb Party leader Samy Gemayel called on the Lebanese government to give this issue paramount importance as the fate of many Lebanese who had been jailed by the Syrian regime for decades has once again come into focus.

In a post on his X account, Gemayel demanded immediate action to uncover the fate of missing Lebanese detainees, including Boutros Khawand, a member of the Kataeb political bureau.

"In light of reports from Hama about the release of prisoners, including Lebanese who have been detained for decades, we call on the Lebanese government to give this matter the utmost attention," Gemayel wrote.

He appealed to authorities to work closely with security agencies, gather intelligence, and deploy special teams to uncover the fate of the detainees and ensure the rapid return of those released.

Gemayel emphasized Lebanon’s responsibility to address this long-standing humanitarian issue, saying that "the Lebanese state is obligated to uncover the fate of its citizens and to stop abandoning them to uncertainty after decades of neglect and submission to the criminal Syrian regime."

"It is time to resolve this file out of respect for the detainees and their families, who have endured decades of suffering."
