Gemayel Meets Delegation to Address Plight of Lebanese Detainees in Syria

Lebanese Kataeb Party leader Samy Gemayel hosted a delegation from the Association of Lebanese Detainees in Syrian Prisons at his office in Bikfaya. The delegation, led by Ali Abou Dehn and including Raymond Souaidan and Joseph Hallit, discussed the plight of Lebanese detainees in Syrian prisons and explored the necessary steps to uncover their fate in the aftermath of the Assad regime’s fall.

During the discussions, Gemayel stressed the urgent need to mobilize all relevant parties to determine the fate of Lebanese citizens who have been detained in Syria. He emphasized the importance of continuous collaboration to bring this matter to a definitive resolution, highlighting the moral and national responsibility to seek justice for the detainees and their families.

Gemayel also briefed the delegation on a memorandum he submitted to the Lebanese government, urging it to take all necessary legal and diplomatic measures to investigate the facts and uncover the fate of forcibly disappeared and detained Lebanese citizens in Syrian prisons.

The Kataeb chief also advocated for fair compensation for detainees who endured years of suffering in Syrian prisons, urging the government to prioritize this issue and take concrete actions to uncover the fate of the detainees. He stressed the need for similar compensation to be granted to the families of those who lost their lives under torture, drawing comparisons to the indemnifications provided to individuals released from Israeli prisons.

The meeting was attended by Kataeb political bureau members Mounir El Deek, George Estefan, and Rita Boulos, as well as lawyer Lara Saade, head of the party’s Legislative and Public Policy Department.
