Gemayel Urges Accountability After Damascus Church Bombing, Says Condemnation ‘No Longer Enough’

Kataeb Party leader Samy Gemayel condemned Sunday’s deadly bombing at the Mar Elias Greek Orthodox Church in the Al-Dweila neighborhood of Damascus, calling it a calculated attack aimed at sending political messages through terror and the targeting of religious minorities.

“Targeting minorities, particularly Christians, through acts of terror is nothing more than an attempt to send political messages at the expense of innocent lives,” Gemayel said in a post on his X account.

Gemayel called on Syria’s new authorities to take decisive and transparent action.

“It is the responsibility of the new authorities in Syria to fully assume their duties and match words with action by holding the perpetrators accountable, pursuing those inciting such acts, and firmly confronting hate speech that paves the way for organized violence,” he said.

“Condemnation alone is no longer enough.”
