A special cabinet session dedicated to addressing the issue of arms control is set to take place within the next ten days, in what would mark the first official step by the state toward addressing the issue of non-state weapons, according to sources cited by Al-Hadath channel.
The sources indicated that Israel is expected to reciprocate by withdrawing from five positions it currently occupies in southern Lebanon.
Diplomatic sources also told Al-Hadath that the Quintet Committee, comprised of the United States, France, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Qatar, has warned that has warned that if Lebanon fails to place all weapons under the exclusive control of the state, both the committee and the UNIFIL peacekeeping force will lose their relevance.
In a further sign of mounting international pressure, the sources said U.S. envoy Tom Barrack delivered a clear message to Lebanese officials, stating that any delay in fulfilling commitments is unacceptable and would lead to a suspension of cooperation. Barrack reportedly gave Lebanon a one-week deadline to initiate serious steps toward arms control, and a six-month window to demonstrate tangible results on the ground.
