Hezbollah said it does not currently intend to retaliate against Israel or the United States following U.S. airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities ordered by President Donald Trump. Speaking to Newsweek late Saturday, a spokesperson for the Iran-backed militant group stressed that Iran could handle the confrontation on its own.
"Iran is a strong country capable of defending itself," the spokesperson said. "Logic dictates that it can confront America and Israel."
This isn’t the first time Hezbollah has publicly distanced itself from direct involvement in the current Israel-Iran flare-up. After Israel began a sustained aerial campaign targeting Iranian sites last week, the group signaled that it would not immediately intervene in support of Tehran.
However, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz issued a stark warning on Friday, accusing Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem of threatening renewed aggression, stating that Qassem "hasn't learned from his predecessors." He cautioned that "the Lebanese proxy should be careful and understand that Israel has lost patience with the terrorists who threaten it."
Hezbollah’s spokesperson countered that Qassem has so far expressed only rhetorical support for Iran, but noted that that future developments may affect the group's calculus.
"Therefore, the issue remains subject to developments," the spokesperson said, adding that "Iran certainly has its own military capabilities."
