Israel remains committed to the ceasefire agreement reached with Lebanon under U.S. mediation, but reserves the right to respond to any threats posed by Hezbollah, Israel's ambassador to the United States said, underscoring ongoing disagreements over the scope of a broader U.S.-Iran understanding announced this week.
In a statement posted on social media, Israeli Ambassador Yechiel Leiter said Israel would continue to abide by the truce reached with Lebanon, the United States, and Israel, provided Hezbollah does not violate its terms.
"Israel remains committed to the ceasefire agreement reached between Israel, Lebanon and the United States," Leiter said. "If Hezbollah does not violate the agreement, it will be upheld."
He added that Israel would continue to maintain what it views as its right to act against threats to its security.
"Under all circumstances, Israel retains its right to respond to attacks against it and to thwart threats to its territory, citizens and soldiers," he said.
Leiter's remarks came after U.S. President Donald Trump called on both Israel and Lebanon to respect the ceasefire provisions outlined in a memorandum of understanding signed this week between Washington and Tehran as part of a broader regional de-escalation effort.
The ambassador, however, drew a distinction between the ceasefire agreement negotiated between Israel and Lebanon under U.S. auspices and the separate U.S.-Iran accord, which includes provisions related to Lebanon.
His comments appeared to reinforce Israel's position that it is bound by the ceasefire arrangement reached with Lebanon and the United States, rather than by commitments contained in the U.S.-Iran memorandum.
The agreement between Washington and Tehran reportedly stipulates that military operations in Lebanon should come to an end as part of wider efforts to reduce tensions across the region.
Israeli officials, however, have maintained that Israel is not obligated by the terms of that accord and has continued to emphasize its freedom to act against Hezbollah when it deems necessary.
Leiter also stopped short of addressing whether Israel intends to withdraw from the expanded security buffer zone it has established in southern Lebanon during its campaign against Hezbollah.
