The Israeli military said Friday it had destroyed a large Hezbollah underground complex beneath the Ali al-Taher Ridge in southern Lebanon after clearing the site and killing numerous Hezbollah operatives believed to have been sheltering there.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) released footage showing troops searching the tunnels before the underground network was destroyed overnight.

The military said about 50 Hezbollah operatives were believed to have been holed up beneath Ali al-Taher when a new ceasefire took effect in June. It said no members of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps were found inside the tunnels, contradicting recent reports that Iranian personnel were present at the site.

According to the IDF, many of the Hezbollah operatives were killed during the operation to capture the underground complex, including some who attempted to flee through the tunnels and others who tried to bring reinforcements into the area.

Video released by the military showed two Hezbollah operatives being struck after opening fire from one of the tunnel shafts. The IDF said troops found about a dozen bodies inside the tunnels, although it assessed that some Hezbollah operatives had managed to escape the area.

The military said it would “reorganize” its forces around Ali al-Taher following the destruction of the underground infrastructure, but would maintain control of the ridge through continued surveillance and firepower.

The IDF said its forces used more than 1,100 tons of explosives to destroy the underground infrastructure at Ali al-Taher.

The network beneath the Ali al-Taher Heights comprised eight tunnels stretching more than 5,400 meters in total, according to the military. Troops found a range of weapons and military equipment inside, including dozens of explosive drones and other unmanned aerial vehicles, machine guns, anti-tank missiles, hundreds of mines, rocket-propelled grenade rounds and explosive devices.

The IDF said it would continue operating in southern Lebanon to eliminate threats to Israeli communities and its forces.

“IDF troops continue to operate in the security zone in southern Lebanon to clear the area and prevent the Hezbollah terrorist organization from harming Israeli citizens,” the military said.
