An Israeli drone strike on a car near the town of Hawsh al-Sayyid Ali in northeastern Lebanon wounded six people, including five Syrians and one Lebanese national, as the Israeli military said it had targeted a Syrian man it accused of planning attacks under Iranian direction.
The strike took place near Hawsh al-Sayyid Ali in the Hermel district, close to the Syrian-Lebanese border. The Emergency Operations Center at Lebanon’s Ministry of Public Health said Friday evening that the attack injured six people, including two women among the five Syrian nationals.
Israeli media initially reported that the strike was part of an attempted assassination of a figure in northeastern Lebanon, but that the attempt had failed.
The Israeli army said it had carried out an airstrike earlier in the day along the Syrian-Lebanese border targeting Yosef Ali Al-Hassan, whom it described as a Syrian militant planning attacks against Israeli civilians and troops under Iranian direction.
In a statement, the military accused Al-Hassan of advancing “terror plots against Israeli civilians and IDF forces operating in southern Syria, under the direction of the Iranian terror regime.”
The army said it had thwarted several plots attributed to Al-Hassan over the past year, including planned rocket and drone attacks against Israeli forces. The military did not immediately clarify whether it believed he had been killed in the strike.
