Israel Strikes Key Bridges Linking Western Bekaa to Southern Lebanon

The Israeli military carried out a previously issued threat on Friday, striking two bridges linking the towns of Sohmor and Mashghara over the Litani River in eastern Lebanon, though the structures were not completely destroyed.

The strike followed warnings by Israeli army spokesperson Col. Avichay Adraee, who said the military was prepared to target key crossings used by Hezbollah to move fighters and weapons into southern Lebanon.

“Due to Hezbollah’s activities and the transfer of operatives under civilian cover, the Israeli army is compelled to carry out broad and precise strikes against terrorist infrastructure,” Adraee said. “To prevent the transfer of reinforcements and weapons, the Israeli army intends to attack the Sohmor–Mashghara bridges.”

He also urged civilians to move north of the Zahrani River and avoid traveling south, warning that doing so could put their lives at risk.

Israeli officials have accused Hezbollah of using bridges along the Litani River as logistical routes, noting that at least five such crossings have already been targeted in recent strikes. The military warned that additional bridges in the area could be hit.

Earlier, local sources in the Bekaa region told Al-Markazia that any sustained targeting of the Sohmor and Mashghara bridges would have serious consequences for civilian movement, disrupting a key link between western Bekaa and southern Lebanon. The two crossings serve as vital connectors between both sides of the Litani River and are considered a central transportation hub for several surrounding towns.

The two bridges link the towns of Sohmor and Mashghara across a valley and local waterway, forming a critical part of the internal road network relied upon by residents for daily travel. They connect several villages across the western Bekaa and serve as essential routes for the movement of people, as well as agricultural and commercial activities.

The Sohmor bridge is located south of Lake Qaraoun and serves as a vital link connecting Sohmor with Mashghara and surrounding villages, significantly reducing travel time between communities. It experiences regular daily traffic and is considered a central artery for local mobility.

The Mashghara bridge, also situated in the western Bekaa, spans the Litani River and facilitates the movement of residents and goods between Mashghara, Sohmor, and neighboring towns. Its role as a key crossing between both sides of the river makes it an essential transportation route and a potential target in military strategies aimed at disrupting movement.

In a separate incident, an Israeli drone strike targeted worshippers as they were leaving a mosque in Sohmor, killing two people and wounding 11 others, according to local reports.
