Israeli Airstrikes, Evacuation Orders and Hezbollah Rocket Fire Mark New Escalation in Southern Lebanon

Israeli airstrikes intensified across southern Lebanon on Wednesday as the military announced a new wave of attacks targeting Hezbollah infrastructure, while the Iran-backed group continued launching rocket and drone attacks against Israeli troops operating in the south.

The Israeli military said it launched a broad series of airstrikes targeting Hezbollah infrastructure in multiple areas of southern Lebanon. Earlier in the day, the army issued evacuation warnings for residents in seven villages ahead of the strikes.

Residents of Maashouq, Jarjouaa, Yanouh, Burj al-Shamali, Hallousiyeh al-Fawqa, Debaal and Abbasiyeh were instructed to evacuate their homes and move at least one kilometer away.

“In light of the Hezbollah terror organization’s violations of the ceasefire agreement, the IDF is forced to act against it with force and does not intend to harm you,” Israeli army spokesman Col. Avichay Adraee said in a statement posted on X.

He urged civilians to leave immediately and warned that anyone located near Hezbollah fighters, facilities or military equipment was placing their life at risk.

The evacuation warnings were followed by a series of strikes across southern Lebanon.

Meanwhile, Lebanon’s National News Agency reported that an Israeli airstrike targeted a vehicle on the coastal highway in Jiyyeh, around 20 kilometers south of Beirut, on the main road linking the capital to southern Lebanon. Reports indicated that the vehicle was carrying food supplies and humanitarian aid intended for residents of southern Lebanon.

A second vehicle was struck shortly afterward near the Barja intersection on the same highway.

The strikes followed two similar attacks on vehicles along the same highway on Saturday.

Israeli aircraft also targeted a vehicle at the Shaaitiyeh junction near the Al-Maaliyeh intersection in the Tyre district, while another vehicle was hit on the Naqoura road near the Relax Hotel, where one person was reportedly wounded.

Additional drone strikes targeted the Deir Aames area, while Israeli warplanes carried out two strikes each on the southern towns of Shaqra and Braasheet, as well as Majdal Zoun and Kounine.

Israeli artillery and gunfire also continued throughout the day. Israeli forces fired bursts of machine-gun fire toward Wadi al-Hujair and the outskirts of Ghandouriyeh, while a drone strike targeted the town of Zebdine in the morning.

Overnight, Israeli troops reportedly carried out a demolition operation in the town of Khiam and conducted heavy machine-gun sweeps across the area.

Meanwhile, Civil Defense teams from the voluntary center in Burj al-Shamali worked to evacuate civilians from the town following the Israeli warnings.

Lebanon’s Health Ministry said Israeli strikes killed 13 people across southern Lebanon on Tuesday, including a Lebanese soldier, a child and two Civil Defense rescue workers.

According to the ministry, an airstrike on the city of Nabatiyeh killed five people, including two Civil Defense rescuers. Another strike near Jebchit killed four people, including a soldier and a Syrian national, while a third strike in Bint Jbeil killed four civilians, including a woman and a child.

On the Israeli side, the military said Hezbollah fired several rockets toward Israeli troops stationed in southern Lebanon, triggering warning sirens in the border community of Zarit.

The Israeli army said the rockets landed near Israeli forces but caused no injuries.

The military also said it intercepted what it described as a Hezbollah drone targeting troops operating in southern Lebanon. No casualties were reported.

Separately, the Israeli military said sirens that sounded in the northern Israeli border community of Avivim were later determined to be false alarms.

Israeli army spokesperson Ella Waweya also released footage on X from inside a tank belonging to the 401st Brigade, showing what she described as the killing of a Hezbollah operative who had been using surveillance equipment against Israeli forces.

According to Waweya, combat forces from the brigade operating under Division 146 continue to conduct operations south of what she described as the forward defensive line in order to destroy Hezbollah infrastructure and eliminate threats against Israeli civilians.

She said Israeli troops identified a militant operating surveillance equipment against Israeli forces and “eliminated him in a rapid closure of the operational circle using tank fire.”

The Israeli military also said it had struck 40 Hezbollah sites and killed operatives who it said posed a threat to troops operating in southern Lebanon over the past 24 hours.

According to the military, the targets included weapons depots and buildings allegedly used by Hezbollah to plan and carry out attacks. The army also said it struck several rocket launchers that had been prepared for launch toward Israel.
