An Israeli military official has ruled out recommending the full transfer of control over southern Lebanon to the Lebanese army for now, citing concerns about its ability to assert authority. The remarks, reported by Yedioth Ahronoth, come as the Israeli military continues operations against Hezbollah infrastructure in the region.
"We will not recommend transferring control in southern Lebanon to the Lebanese army until it fulfills its duties and demonstrates sufficient capability to impose its authority," the official was quoted as saying. "We will not advise handing over control to the Lebanese army until it fully carries out its responsibilities."
The official affirmed that the Israeli military will continue to target Hezbollah positions, with operations aimed at dismantling the group's infrastructure in Lebanon.
"We will continue working to eliminate any infrastructure in Lebanon that poses a threat or could become a threat in the future," the official said.
According to Yedioth Ahronoth, the Israeli army sees itself as solely responsible for ensuring Hezbollah does not reestablish its military presence. The report also revealed that the military is planning to strike Hezbollah compounds near towns in the Galilee.
"The Israeli army is responsible for protecting northern residents, not the Lebanese army or any other foreign force," the official was quoted as saying.
The official further disclosed that the Israeli army has a long list of Hezbollah weapons sites in the eastern sector near the Upper Galilee.
"The army’s target bank includes a long list of Hezbollah weapon sites in the eastern sector bordering the Upper Galilee, which will be destroyed in the remaining three weeks of operations," he stated.
