The Israeli army renewed warnings to residents of Beirut’s southern suburbs on Sunday, urging people in several neighborhoods to evacuate immediately as fighting with Hezbollah intensified across Lebanon.
An Israeli military spokesperson called on residents of Haret Hreik, Ghobeiry, Hadath, Burj al-Barajneh, Tahwitat al-Ghadir and Chiyah to leave the areas at once and not return until further notice.
The warning came as Israeli forces carried out a series of airstrikes and artillery attacks across southern Lebanon and beyond.
Early Sunday, at around 4:15 a.m., an Israeli airstrike hit an apartment in a residential building in the Sharhabil, northeast of the city of Sidon. Preliminary reports indicated that the intended target of the strike was Palestinian Hamas official Wissam Taha, a resident of the Sharhabil area originally from the Ain al-Hilweh refugee camp and the brother of Hamas’s spokesman in Lebanon, Jihad Taha.
Israeli aircraft also launched a pre-dawn strike on the towns of Debbine and Taybeh, accompanied by heavy artillery shelling. Additional intermittent artillery fire struck Wadi al-Saluki and areas around the towns of Qabrikha and Touline.
Artillery shelling also hit the outskirts of the border towns of Ayta al-Shaab and Ramyeh, while Israeli jets carried out another strike on the Qatrani-Shbeil forests in the Jezzine district after targeting the same area overnight.
The Israeli military said it had targeted Hezbollah rocket-launching platforms and destroyed command facilities belonging to the group’s elite Radwan Force in Beirut.
“We will continue to act forcefully against Hezbollah, which is systematically building its infrastructure among civilian population centers across Lebanon,” the army said.
Israeli media reported that about 10 rockets were launched from Lebanon toward the northern Israeli city of Haifa in the latest barrage. The newspaper Israel Hayom quoted Israeli officials as saying that Israel does not currently seek to expand its attacks on Lebanon as it remains focused on Iran.
Meanwhile, the Israeli military said dozens of Hezbollah fighters had been killed during what it described as “targeted raids” carried out by ground troops in southern Lebanon.
According to the army, soldiers from the 7th Armored Brigade, operating under the 36th Division, launched an operation last week in the Rab al-Thalathine area aimed at locating and dismantling Hezbollah infrastructure and operatives inside the village.
During the raids, Israeli forces killed dozens of Hezbollah fighters and destroyed multiple sites belonging to the group, including weapons depots, a command center and observation posts, the military said.
The Israeli army added that its Northern Command is continuing preparations to receive additional reinforcements in the coming days.
On Friday, the military said the buildup would include the deployment of the 98th Division along with two brigade-level combat teams and additional combat engineering battalions. The Golani Brigade was also moved earlier this week to the Northern Command and is now ready for deployment, the army said.
In another statement issued Saturday, the Israeli military said it had killed another commander linked to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps in a strike in Lebanon earlier this week.
The strike on Wednesday killed Hisham Abd al-Karim Yassin, whom the army described as a “key commander” in Hezbollah’s communications unit and a member of the Palestine Corps of the Quds Force, the IRGC’s overseas operations arm.
According to the Israeli military, Hezbollah’s communications unit is responsible for maintaining operational communications across the group’s network and oversees the development, maintenance and use of its communications systems.
The army said Yassin had been involved in helping Hezbollah rebuild its capabilities and had worked to advance Iran’s entrenchment in Lebanon.
