Justice Minister Adel Nassar has appointed a panel of judicial investigators to reopen Lebanon’s most sensitive political assassination cases, in what is seen as a decisive step to end the long-standing culture of impunity in the country.
According to information obtained by Voice of Lebanon, the move is part of a broader effort by the Justice Ministry to revive stalled investigations into major political killings that have shaped Lebanon’s modern history.
Among the appointments, Judge Amira Sabra was assigned to the case of Sheikh Ahmad Assaf’s assassination, while Judge Fadi Akiki will oversee the probe into the attempted assassination of engineer Mustafa Maaruf Saad. Judge Yehya Ghaboura was named to lead the investigation into the 1978 armed attack on the northern town of Ehden, which left MP Tony Frangieh, members of his family, and several companions dead.
Judge Joseph Tamer will take charge of the case concerning the attempted assassination of late President Camille Chamoun, and Judge Alaa Al-Khatib will handle investigations into the clashes that took place in the Borday area of Baalbek.
Other high-profile cases include the assassination of former Minister Elie Hobeika, assigned to Judge Fadi Sawan; the killing of MP Antoine Ghanem and his companions, under Judge Samer Younes; and the murder of Sheikh Saleh Aridi in Baysour, led by Judge Kamal Nassar.
Judge Sami Sader was appointed to investigate the assassination of MP and Minister Pierre Amine Gemayel and his bodyguard Samir Chartouni. Judge Samer Lishaa will lead the probe into the killing of journalist Samir Kassir, while Judge Claude Ghanem will investigate the assassination of MP and journalist Gebran Ghassan Tueni and his security detail.
