Kataeb Hails Cabinet's 'Historic' Move on Illegal Arms, Says Disarmament Plan Must Be Followed Through

The Kataeb’s Political Bureau held its weekly meeting under the chairmanship of Party Leader Samy Gemayel, with the participation of the Central Council, to commemorate the fifth anniversary of the Beirut port explosion and honor the victims, including Kataeb martyrs: Secretary-General Nazar Najarian, Joe Akiki, Joe Andoun, and Antoine Barmaki.

In a statement issued after the meeting, the Political Bureau praised the government’s latest session on illegal weapons, which included a mandate for the Lebanese Army to draft a clear implementation plan with set deadlines. The party described the move as a “historic decision” that places Lebanon on the path toward restoring its sovereignty and restores the state's independent decision-making authority. The Bureau reaffirmed its confidence in the government to follow through with discussions on the matter of exclusive arms control until a final resolution is reached.

The Bureau warned against any attempt to undermine the decision or revert to tactics of intimidation and coercion, stressing that such methods belong to a bygone era and will not be tolerated under any pretext. It also firmly rejected the remarks made by Hezbollah Secretary-General Naim Qassem, saying his statements reflect a state of denial and an attempt to drag the country into a confrontation that the Lebanese people do not want.

The Political Bureau also commended the efforts of security forces in containing unlawful street actions aimed at pressuring authorities or displaying force in defiance of a sovereign decision.

Marking the fifth anniversary of the 2020 Beirut port explosion, the Kataeb Political Bureau said this tragedy would not have occurred if Lebanon had been governed by a fully functioning state that asserted its authority across all Lebanese territory  and prevented ports from being turned into warehouses for missiles and explosives.

It party reiterated its demand for judicial closure in the port explosion case through the issuance of an indictment that clearly identifies those responsible and lays the foundation for genuine accountability. The Bureau described this as a fundamental prerequisite for justice to be served.

The Bureau praised the serious and persistent efforts of Justice Minister Adel Nassar, who worked to remove obstacles hindering the investigation and showed a clear commitment to safeguarding the case and ensuring it leads to the justice long awaited by the Lebanese.

It also hailed the initiative of Culture Minister Ghassan Salameh to include the Beirut Port's grain silos on the national heritage registry and convert them into a memorial site. This initiative, Kataeb said, ensures that the tragedy remains alive in the hearts of the Lebanese, serving as a stark reminder of what can happen when the state fails to uphold its responsibilities.

Finally, the Political Bureau called for an expedited restoration, development, and full reactivation of the Port of Beirut so that it may once again serve as a key economic pillar in Lebanon’s recovery journey.
