The Kataeb's Political Bureau held its weekly meeting, chaired by Party Leader Samy Gemayel, to review the latest political and security developments. Following the discussions, the Bureau issued the following statement:
1. The Political Bureau welcomes the progress achieved in implementing the Lebanese Army’s disarmament plan, as outlined in the report presented to the Cabinet, and calls for its continued and accelerated execution across all Lebanese territories in line with government decisions.
The party reiterates its call on the international community to pressure Israel to halt its attacks on Lebanon and to prevent any military escalation that threatens the country’s sovereignty and the safety of civilians, particularly in the south.
The Bureau also expresses concern over repeated statements by Hezbollah officials, especially its MPs, declaring that the group is not concerned with disarmament north of the Litani River. If Hezbollah has relinquished its weapons south of the Litani, thereby giving up its intention to fight Israel, then for what purpose does it insist on keeping its arms north of the river? Is this not an attempt to maintain excess power and use it internally against the Lebanese people, therefore undermining the State and the very concept of legitimacy?
2. The Bureau commends the measures taken by the Minister of Justice, particularly his latest circular concerning notaries, which represents a serious step toward removing Lebanon from the Financial Action Task Force’s grey list on money laundering. It also praises the minister's initiative toward the Syrian authorities to obtain information on those involved in political assassinations, most notably Habib Chartouni, the assassin of martyred President Bashir Gemayel, as well as his efforts to uncover the fate of Lebanese detainees in Syrian prisons, including Kataeb member Boutros Khawand. The party further welcomes the appointment of judicial investigators to handle political assassination cases, particularly those of MPs Pierre Gemayel and Antoine Ghanem.
3. The Kataeb Party reaffirms its commitment to ensuring that Lebanese expatriates are able to vote for all 128 members of Parliament. As the Bureau took note of the ongoing efforts by the party leader in coordination with Lebanese officials to resolve this issue, it urges the government to refer the necessary amendment to Parliament to guarantee that elections are held on time and that all Lebanese, both residents and expatriates, can fully participate.
4. The Political Bureau authorizes the party’s Secretary-General to initiate a comprehensive round of appointments across all party positions.
