Kataeb Party Raises Concern over Tripoli Vote Results, Calls for Safeguarding Beirut’s Power-Sharing Model

The Kataeb's Political Bureau held its weekly meeting under the chairmanship of Party Leader  Samy Gemayel. After assessing the latest developments, notably the recent round of municipal elections, the Bureau issued the following statement:

1. In the wake of the municipal elections, the Kataeb Party extends its congratulations to all winners across the northern districts, particularly in Batroun, Koura, Zgharta, and Bsharri. The party especially commends its own members who earned the trust of their local communities as mayors, municipal council members, and mukhtars. Through their new positions, they are expected to embody a forward-thinking model of good governance, reflecting the party’s longstanding conviction that empowering municipalities and passing a decentralization law are critical steps toward establishing an effective system of local administration and restoring balance to regional development.

The Political Bureau closely monitored the conduct of the elections in the North and Akkar governorates and flagged a series of serious violations that cast a heavy shadow over the overall electoral atmosphere. While the Kataeb Party firmly condemns these blatant breaches, which run counter to the state's intended direction, it also acknowledges the swift action taken by relevant governmental and security bodies in pursuing those involved in bribery, acts of violence, attempted obstruction of the vote, and random gunfire. The party stresses that strong and immediate measures must be put in place to prevent the recurrence of such abuses and ensure accountability for those responsible. These steps are crucial to maintaining the trust of both voters and candidates and upholding the credibility of the democratic process.

The Bureau also expresses deep concern over the troubling outcome of the elections in Tripoli, the capital of the North, where results effectively marginalized key family groups and disrupted the city’s long-standing social mosaic that constitutes an essential component of its communal fabric.

Looking ahead to the upcoming elections in Beirut, the Kataeb Party emphasizes the importance of preserving the capital’s diverse and inclusive identity, along with the parity system that has defined its municipal councils for decades. The party is counting on the awareness and civic responsibility of Beirutis to maintain this balance.

It also underscores the urgent need for a serious and comprehensive response to the troubling imbalances seen in both Beirut and Tripoli, once the current electoral process concludes. All legitimate concerns must be taken into account, the party argues, to spare the country from falling into the trap of repeated political clashes at every electoral milestone.

2. The Political Bureau considers the recent remarks by Hezbollah’s Secretary-General, Naim Qassem, who accused certain Lebanese of being in alignment with the Israeli enemy, as outrageous, especially in light of the devastation Hezbollah’s own misguided choices have inflicted on the country.

Such rhetoric, the Kataeb Party asserts, once again undermines Hezbollah’s repeated claims of commitment state-building—a notion Qassem invoked in the very same speech. This glaring contradiction is yet more evidence that Hezbollah continues to maneuver through its public messaging. What’s needed now is not more rhetoric but a genuine commitment to the ceasefire agreement and sincere engagement with the efforts of the President of the Republic to shield Lebanon from new dangers.
