LAF Wins Ceasefire Monitoring Praise but Faces Calls to Complete Disarmament Plan

Senior officials convened on Wednesday for the 12th iteration of the Pentalateral in Naqoura to review the Lebanese Armed Forces’ (LAF) progress in maintaining the cessation of hostilities and advancing disarmament efforts across Lebanon, the U.S. Embassy in Beirut said in a statement.

The session, hosted by the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), brought together Lt. Gen. Joseph Clearfield, chairman of the Mechanism; U.S. Counselor Morgan Ortagus; and senior representatives from each participating delegation.

According to the statement, all members reaffirmed their joint commitment to Lebanon’s stability and agreed on a more structured schedule for upcoming sessions. The 13th through 16th Pentalateral meetings will be held before the end of the year.

“Formalizing the meeting schedule ensures that all participants are aligned, informed, and ready to present transparent updates to the international community,” Clearfield said. “This predictability supports operational efficiency and builds the shared confidence and trust necessary to advance lasting peace in Lebanon.”

During the meeting, the LAF presented a detailed operational update, highlighting a recent mission to clear an underground facility near Wadi Al-Aziyeh. The operation included reconnaissance of the area, which will be revisited at a later date.

Clearfield praised the LAF’s conduct during the mission. “The LAF’s professionalism and commitment is notable,” he said. “I have observed them conduct a wide range of operations, from providing escorts for olive harvesting to carrying out complex operations to locate, dismantle, and neutralize an underground facility believed to be used by malign actors. Their performance reflects the strength of Lebanon’s Armed Forces and their resolve to secure their nation’s future.”

The participants also discussed measures to address violations of the cessation of hostilities arrangements, agreeing to keep the issue as a standing agenda item in future sessions as part of a joint effort to uphold peace and accountability.

“We continue to monitor developments in Lebanon and welcome the government’s decision to bring all weapons under state control by the end of the year,” Ortagus said. “The LAF must now fully implement its plan.”

The Mechanism, which includes Lebanon, Israel, the United States, France, and UNIFIL, continues to play a central role in monitoring, verifying, and supporting the implementation of commitments made by both Lebanon and Israel under the cessation framework.
