Larijani Condemns Disarmament Timetable While Claiming Respect for Lebanon’s Decisions

Iran’s top security official, Ali Larijani, stressed on Wednesday that Tehran respects Lebanon’s sovereignty and does not intend to interfere in its internal affairs, while signaling conditional support if requested by the Lebanese government.

Larijani, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, reportedly reacted with frustration to Lebanese President Joseph Aoun’s firm statements on non-interference and the exclusive authority of the State over weapons. Sources said he expressed his grievances to Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, offering advice and criticism while rejecting any set timeline for disarmament and questioning the U.S. plan on the issue.

Speaking from Ain El-Tineh, Larijani said he is “very happy to be in Lebanon,” hailing the long history of ties between the two countries.

“Lebanon is a friendly country, and its people were a shining example in confronting the occupying force of Israel,” he said.

“We respect any decisions the Lebanese government makes regarding factions on its territory. No foreign State should issue orders to Lebanon or impose demands on its internal affairs. Lebanon’s unity and success in development and prosperity are important. Unlike some other states, Iran’s policy is to support strong, independent countries in the region,” Larijani added.

He emphasized that Iran does not insist on setting timelines or mandates, and that “friendly and comprehensive dialogue allows Lebanon to reach sound decisions.” Larijani also stressed that Iran’s message is focused on regional unity, saying “it is important that countries in the region make independent decisions and do not take orders from across the oceans.”

“Iran does not intend to interfere in the country's internal affairs and respects any outcomes coordinated by the Lebanese government with factions," he said. "But if any party requests assistance, then we will provide it.”

Addressing the Lebanese public, Larijani said, “Your enemy is Israel, and your friend is whoever opposed it and confronted it.” He noted that “unlike the Americans, we did not come with any plans or papers for you. We do not interfere in your internal affairs."

On reconstruction efforts, Larijani added: “We will make any effort we can, and so far we have already provided assistance in this regard.”
