Lebanese Army and UNIFIL Take Control of Hezbollah’s Largest Camp in Southern Lebanon

The Lebanese Army and the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) have entered Hezbollah-controlled centers and camps in Zawtar al-Sharqiyah, marking a significant development in southern Lebanon, the Janoubia news website revealed.

The area is known to house some of the group's largest storage and manufacturing facilities.

According to Janoubia sources, the joint forces advanced from Deir Siryan and Zawtar, inspecting Hezbollah military vehicles inside the area. During the search, troops discovered an empty missile launcher mounted on one of the vehicles. A Hezbollah vehicle attempting to enter the camp was also detained while Israeli drones patrolled overhead.

Field sources suggested that this move may signal a shift in UNIFIL and the Lebanese Army’s approach to Hezbollah’s military presence.

"It appears that a decision has been made by UNIFIL and the Lebanese Army to take control of these camps and Hezbollah’s equipment," one source told Janoubia. "What remains unclear is whether Hezbollah agreed to this step or if it caught them by surprise."

The camp in question is considered Hezbollah’s largest in southern Lebanon. Located in Zawtar al-Sharqiyah along the Litani River, it holds strategic importance with direct access to the western Bekaa region.

According to sources, the site has been a key launching point for rockets targeting Israel and has been hit with at least 200 airstrikes since the conflict escalated in October 2023.
