The Lebanese Army has launched a large-scale security operation along the country's northern and eastern borders, deploying troops and Military Intelligence units to tighten border controls and shut down illegal crossings used for smuggling and unauthorized infiltration, according to Annahar, citing informed sources.

The operation is part of what the sources described as a comprehensive field strategy aimed at dismantling smuggling networks that have long exploited the rugged terrain and complex geography of Lebanon's eastern border with Syria.

According to the sources, army units, supported by intensive patrols from the Lebanese Military Intelligence Directorate, are working to reinforce security across the border region by sealing illegal crossings and earthen tunnels that have been used to facilitate cross-border smuggling and infiltration along the Eastern Mountain Range.

As part of the operation, troops have closed numerous unauthorized border routes with earth berms, particularly in the mountainous outskirts of Hermel, an area that has historically been a key corridor for illicit cross-border activity.

The security measures are designed to cut off major smuggling routes used to transport fuel and commercial goods, while also preventing illegal crossings into and out of Lebanon.

The border operation is being carried out alongside intensified reconnaissance patrols by Military Intelligence and the deployment of both fixed and mobile observation posts. According to the sources, the additional security measures are intended to prevent smuggling networks and other outlaw groups from reopening the sealed crossings and to ensure sustained control over the border strip.
