The Lebanese Army’s elite unit has reportedly imposed restrictions on the movements of Tripoli Governor Ramzi Nohra, confining him to his residence following his reassignment by Cabinet, LBCI reported.
Earlier on Wednesday, the Council of Ministers convened at the Baabda Presidential Palace under the chairmanship of President Joseph Aoun and formally placed Nohra at the disposal of the Interior Ministry, effectively relieving him of his duties as governor of North Lebanon.
“This is not a dismissal. He will be reassigned to other duties,” Information Minister Paul Morcos told reporters following the Cabinet session, stressing that Nohra had been “placed at the ministry’s disposal” in the interest of public administration.
Morcos confirmed that Nohra would take on “specific tasks” within the Interior Ministry, although no details were provided regarding the nature or scope of the new role.
The move follows a tense public spat between Nohra and Interior Minister Ahmad Hajjar during Sunday’s municipal elections in North Lebanon. As Hajjar spoke to reporters, Nohra interjected, prompting a sharp rebuke from the minister who cut him off mid-sentence, saying, “I’m speaking.”
Speaking after the incident, Hajjar revealed that a formal complaint had been filed against the governor’s conduct.
“He wanted to defend himself, but doing so in front of the media was inappropriate,” he said.
Commenting on the Cabinet's decision on Wednesday, Hajjar emphasized that the reassignment was a procedural step necessary to initiate the appointment of a new governor.
“In order to name a new governor, the current one must first be placed at the disposal of the ministry,” he explained. “The appointment process is now underway.”
