Lebanese Army Takes Custody of Suspects in Elio Abu Hanna Shooting

The Lebanese Army said on Wednesday that its Intelligence Directorate had taken custody of several suspects handed over by Palestinian security forces in the Shatila refugee camp, following two separate killings that shook the area in recent days.

In a statement, the Army Command said it had received six members of the Palestinian National Security Service in connection with the fatal shooting of Lebanese citizen Elio Abu Hanna, who was gunned down inside the camp. The suspects were reportedly stationed at a security checkpoint at the time of the attack.

On the evening of October 26, 24-year-old Abu Hanna was reportedly driving from Beirut’s Badaro neighborhood toward his home when he unintentionally entered the nearby Shatila refugee camp. Surveillance footage and media accounts indicate that armed individuals at a checkpoint inside the camp opened fire on his vehicle, which subsequently collided with a building.

The army also said it had taken into custody one Lebanese national and four Syrian nationals over the murder of a young woman whose body was found in the camp on October 28.

“An investigation has been launched, and efforts are underway to apprehend the remaining suspects,” the statement said.
