Lebanese Parliament Extends Army Commander's Term for One Year

Lebanon's Parliament approved the one-year extension of the term of Army Commander Joseph Aoun, who was set to retire on January 10, 2025.

Lawmakers also extended the terms of heads of security agencies and senior officers at the rank of Brigadier General and above for one year.

The bill, introduced by Deputy Speaker Elias Bou Saab, was approved despite the absence of MPs from the Free Patriotic Movement.

Additionally, the Parliament extended the mandates of Supreme Judicial Council members whose terms had expired.

The session saw significant disruption and confusion, particularly during the voting process, which was conducted without a clear roll call. This led to renewed calls for the adoption of electronic voting.

With the session concluded, Parliament’s focus now shifts to the looming presidential election session scheduled for January 9. Speaker Nabih Berri has called for a decisive session, setting a one-month deadline for consultations.
