Maronite Bishops Urge Swift Reforms, Emphasize State Sovereignty

The Maronite bishops on Wednesday welcomed the recent wave of administrative and judicial appointments in Lebanon, expressing hope that these steps will mark the beginning of long-awaited reforms.

In a statement issued following their monthly meeting in Bkirki, the bishops called for an acceleration of negotiations between the government and international financial institutions, emphasizing that progress in these talks could bring much-needed relief to the Lebanese people.

The bishops urged political leaders to remain committed to implementing the Taif Agreement while addressing its shortcomings. They stressed that any necessary amendments should prioritize the national interest, rather than being exploited for political gain.

As Lebanon prepares for municipal and mayoral elections, the bishops called on citizens to set a positive example by voting responsibly and rising above sectarian divisions. They also urged residents of Beirut and other major cities to preserve the traditions that safeguard Lebanon’s unique pluralism.

Reaffirming their support for the Lebanese State, the bishops emphasized the importance of fully implementing UN Security Council Resolution 1701. They underscored the need for Lebanon to assert its authority over all its territory and ensure that weapons remain exclusively in the hands of legitimate security forces, which they said is crucial to maintaining stability and security.

The bishops also voiced their support for efforts to reopen Qlayaat Airport and implement expanded decentralization, viewing these initiatives as steps toward improving governance and fostering economic development.
