An explosion at a weapons cache in southern Lebanon on Saturday killed six soldiers and injured others, the Lebanese Army said in an official statement.

The people of Lebanon are marking five years since the Beirut port explosion of August 4, 2020 – a blast that has been described as one of the largest non-nuclear explosions in history. The detonation pulverised the port, ruined vast sections of the city and was felt as far away as Cyprus. It also claimed the lives of more than 220 people, injured more than 7,000 more and left more than 300,000 homeless.

President Michel Aoun on Tuesday met with UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon Jan Kubis at the Presidential Palace in Baabda, with talks featuring high on the first round of the maritime demarcation talks with Israel.
“We hope we can reach an agreement that would preserve Lebanon’s sovereignty rights through the technical negotiations to demarcate the southern maritime border,” Aoun said following the meeting.
For his turn, Kubis praised those who have participated in the first round of the talks, saying they have showed a great sense of responsibility and professionalism.
