Kataeb leader Samy Gemayel on Thursday met with United Nations Coordinator to Lebanon Joanna Wronecka with talks featuring high on the latest developments in Lebanon and the region, namely the integrity of the parliamentary elections and the role of the international organization.

 

“The international organization has a major role in monitoring the parliamentary elections abroad as we are concerned about the voting date of the Lebanese expatriates that was scheduled on May 8, one week before Lebanon’s elections day,” Gemayel stressed.

 

“We have no guarantee nor confidence that these ballot boxes will remain sealed until the date of sorting on May 15. We, as the Kataeb party, believe that an international auditing should be conducted upon the arrival of the ballot boxes in Lebanon,” he noted.

 

The pair also discussed the economic situation namely after May legislative elections.

“The ruling system does not hesitate to continue stealing people’s money. Every day, more than 20 million dollars are drained from the remaining reserves of the Central Bank to protect itself from the consequences of the deterioration of the exchange rate with the aim of drugging people at the gates of elections in the largest electoral bribery paid from depositors’ seized money and prevent them from demonstrating against the deterioration of the Lebanese pound until the completion of the elections when the subsidies are lifted and the US dollar exchange rate soars,” he pointed out.

 

Gemayel stressed the ambiguous situation in the Central Bank as arrest warrants were issued locally and internationally against the Governor Riad Salameh and he is still in his position enjoying the support of the system and negotiating with the International Monetary Fund, saying that this situation is unacceptable and affects the credibility of Lebanon.

 

“Do not be drawn into the illusion of stability of the monetary situation because it will explode in our face after the elections,” he said addressing the Lebanese people.

 

The Kataeb leader stressed the need to achieve change and the holding of the ruling elite accountable.

 

“We seek reliable people who can advance the country away from the system that will return to its settlements as soon as the elections are over. Alternative options exist in all regions,” he added.

 

“We hope that the Lebanese will choose correctly and find an independent, transformative, sovereign political force that is fighting the battle to build a new Lebanon,” he concluded.

 

The meeting was also attended by the party’s International Affairs Coordinator Marwan Abdallah and the party’s Foreign Affairs Head Dr. Michel Abi Abdallah.
