Mikati Meets Army General Leading France’s Efforts in Monitoring Hezbollah-Israel Ceasefire

Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati met with General Guillaume Ponchin, head of the French military delegation participating in the Quintet Committee tasked with monitoring the ceasefire between Hezbollah and Israel. The meeting took place this morning at the Grand Serail and was attended by French Ambassador to Lebanon Hervé Magro, alongside Mikati's advisors, Ambassador Boutros Assaker and Ziad Mikati.

During the discussions, Mikati outlined Lebanon's key priorities, emphasizing the need to secure a lasting ceasefire, address ongoing Israeli violations, ensure the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Lebanese territories, and bolster the deployment of the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) in the southern region.

France’s Role in the Ceasefire Mechanism

In a statement issued by the French Embassy, France reiterated its commitment to the ceasefire monitoring mechanism, which is chaired by the United States. The mechanism is part of a ceasefire agreement signed on November 26 following months of diplomatic efforts led jointly by the U.S. and international partners, including France.

The French Embassy urged all parties involved to uphold the work of the monitoring committee and refrain from actions that could jeopardize its effectiveness.

France’s participation in the mechanism is led by General Ponchin, who is supported by a team of approximately ten military and civilian personnel from the Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Armed Forces.

The embassy statement pointed out that the French delegation will be working closely with the Lebanese Armed Forces, Israeli forces, and the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) to oversee the implementation of the ceasefire agreement. In addition, the mechanism will also collaborate with Lebanon’s Military Technical Support Committee to strengthen and expand the deployment of the Lebanese Armed Forces in southern Lebanon.

France’s efforts are aligned with the broader objectives of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701, which calls for the cessation of hostilities, the withdrawal of unauthorized armed groups, and the reinforcement of Lebanese sovereignty in the region, the statement stressed.
