Amid rising domestic tensions and mounting international warnings, Hezbollah’s weapons have emerged once again as one of Lebanon’s most pressing sovereignty challenges. The issue can no longer be postponed or confined to theoretical debate, particularly after the U.S. roadmap, approved by the Cabinet, linked continued support for the Lebanese Armed Forces to the State’s enforcement of exclusive control over arms.
In an interview with kataeb.org, MP Nadim Gemayel warned of the gravity of the current stage, noting that Lebanon stands on the threshold of critical decisions.
He called on the government to remain steadfast in addressing this reality, noting that Hezbollah’s accelerated military preparations point to the risk of sliding into dangerous and unpredictable scenarios.
Gemayel emphasized that managing an issue of this magnitude cannot fall on a single political party; it requires coordinated efforts at both political and institutional levels within a comprehensive national vision that is capable of shielding the country from collapse or escalation into confrontation.
Gemayel emphasized that calling for seriousness does not necessarily mean resorting to escalatory measures; rather, it is a call to reclaim initiative and shift from a position of observation to one of action, all within the bounds of the Constitution and in accordance with the current dynamics.
Gemayel concluded that Lebanon, in all its components, requires a rational and responsible discourse addressing sensitive issues through the lens of safeguarding stability, preserving institutions, and upholding legitimacy. He warned that a diluted or half-hearted approach could be perceived—even unintentionally—as tacit acceptance of the status quo.
“The challenges are immense, and the State is fully aware of the pressures it faces,” Gemayel said. “But leadership in times of crisis is measured by the ability to take control, not merely by passively receiving the outcomes and responding to events.”
Will Lebanon adopt an approach that matches the gravity of the moment before reality imposes itself on everyone?
