Nassar: Handing Over Arms Should Be a Voluntary Step Toward a Shared National Project

Justice Minister Adel Nassar issued a strong call for national unity and the consolidation of arms under the authority of the Lebanese Army, as Israeli strikes continue to hit parts of southern Lebanon and deeper into Lebanon.

In a post published on his personal account on X, Nassar condemned the Israeli strikes that hit the southern suburbs of Beirut on Thursday, describing them as an attack on Lebanese sovereignty.

“Condemning the aggression against Lebanon, particularly in the South and the southern suburbs of Beirut, is the bare minimum,” Nassar wrote. “Remaining silent in the face of a crime is complicity with the perpetrator.”

Nassar stressed that confronting external aggression requires both a functional state and unified society.

“These two conditions necessitate that all weapons be exclusively in the hands of the Lebanese Army,” he said.

He further emphasized that disarmament of non-state actors should not be framed as a surrender or as a result of foreign pressure, but rather as a necessary and voluntary step toward building a viable national project.

“Handing over arms to the state is neither a response to external pressure nor a concession from one party to another,” Nassar wrote. “It is a voluntary commitment to a shared national project in defense of the country and in pursuit of state-building.”
