Nassar Says Syria Agreed to Share Information on Crimes by Former Regime

Justice Minister Adel Nassar said Wednesday that there is “mutual respect for sovereignty” between Lebanon and Syria, revealing that Damascus has pledged to provide information related to crimes committed by the former Syrian regime.

In remarks to Al Arabiya/Al Hadath, Nassar said that discussions with the Syrian side during recent meetings focused on the pursuit of fugitives from justice, adding that judicial cooperation between the two countries will continue.

He stressed that Lebanon has no information indicating the presence of former Syrian regime officials on its territory, underlining that relations between Beirut and Damascus are based on equality and mutual respect.

Nassar also said that Lebanese authorities would reopen the investigation into the 2005 assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri should new information become available.

Progress Toward a Judicial Cooperation Agreement

Syrian Justice Minister Mazhar al-Weis said that talks between the two sides had made progress toward reaching a judicial cooperation agreement founded on the principles of justice and respect for sovereignty.

Speaking at a joint press conference in Beirut alongside his Lebanese counterpart Adel Nassar and Deputy Prime Minister Tarek Mitri earlier this week, al-Weis noted that “the two sides’ views are largely aligned” and that discussions are advancing “within their proper legal framework.”

He said the talks covered a wide range of issues, including judicial cooperation on Syrian detainees held in Lebanon, wanted Syrian and Lebanese fugitives, and older security cases linked to incidents in Lebanon. Al-Weis added that special committees have been formed to pursue the truth and ensure justice, according to Syria’s state news agency SANA.

The Syrian justice minister announced that Damascus had committed to disclosing available information about assassinations that occurred under former President Bashar al-Assad’s rule. The two sides also agreed to support the committee investigating the cases of the forcibly disappeared and to hand over Lebanese fugitives currently residing in Syria.
