A delegation of Lebanese opposition lawmakers met with Janine Hennis-Plasschaert, the United Nations Special Coordinator for Lebanon, to discuss the ongoing turmoil in the country and the wider region. The group included MPs Salim Sayegh, Fouad Makhzoumi, Michel Mouawad, and Michel Douaihy, who conveyed their concerns about the escalating conflict and its implications for national stability.

During the meeting, the opposition lawmakers stressed the urgent need to end the hostilities and implement international resolutions, particularly United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701. They underscored that this resolution, along with Resolutions 1559 and 1680, must be fully enforced to uphold Lebanon’s sovereignty and statehood.

The lawmakers pointed out that the Taif Agreement must serve as the constitutional reference for these international resolutions, calling for a restoration of sovereign decision-making in Lebanon. They also emphasized that the state must have a monopoly on weapons and strategic decisions, advocating for the deployment of the Lebanese Army along the Blue Line and throughout the country's borders.

The MPs also highlighted the critical importance of expediting the election of a new President of the Republic, noting that the presidential vote should not be linked to any other political issues, as establishing security and stability in Lebanon requires legitimate representation.

Ending the war and restoring peace necessitate a government that enjoys the confidence of the Parliament and the presence of effective, productive institutions, the MPs stressed.
