Lebanese President Joseph Aoun said early Monday that rockets fired from Lebanese territory undermine the State's efforts to shield the country from an expanding regional conflict, warning that Lebanon must not once again become a battleground for wars “that have nothing to do with us.”
“The launching of rockets from Lebanese territory at dawn today undermines all the efforts and initiatives undertaken by the Lebanese State to keep Lebanon away from the dangerous military confrontations unfolding in the region,” Aoun said in a statement.
He emphasized that Lebanese officials have repeatedly warned of the consequences such confrontations could have for the country and have consistently called for restraint and a responsible national approach that places the supreme national interest above all else.
While condemning Israeli strikes on Lebanese territory, Aoun also cautioned against allowing Lebanon to be used again as a platform for proxy conflicts tied to broader regional struggles.
“Persisting in using Lebanon once more as a platform for wars of support that have nothing to do with us will expose our country to renewed dangers,” he said. “Responsibility for those risks will rest with the parties that have ignored repeated calls to preserve security and stability in the country.”
The president added that the State would not permit a return to such a scenario, nor would the Lebanese people accept it, noting that many are still working to recover from the damage caused by previous rounds of fighting.
