The people of Lebanon are marking five years since the Beirut port explosion of August 4, 2020 – a blast that has been described as one of the largest non-nuclear explosions in history. The detonation pulverised the port, ruined vast sections of the city and was felt as far away as Cyprus. It also claimed the lives of more than 220 people, injured more than 7,000 more and left more than 300,000 homeless.

United Nations Deputy Special Coordinator for Lebanon Najat Rochdi on Wednesday deemed parliamentary elections as a great gain for the Lebanese people, as the results are not an individual or political party gain, but rather a real profit for Lebanon.
“Lebanon’s parliamentary elections are a great gain for the people of Lebanon. It is not an individual gain or that of a political party, but a real gain for the country. I hope it leads to substantial reform gains, a better future and yields brain gains vs the loss effects of brain drain,” Rochdi wrote on twitter.
