Kataeb Leader Advisor Sassine Sassine noted that the war in southern Lebanon has led to further displacement, destruction, and losses amounting to billions of dollars, considering the repercussions of the war as catastrophic and tragic, yielding no results in supporting Palestinians in Gaza.
"Hezbollah is obstructing the presidential elections through a policy of obstructionism that has been pursued since 2014 until today, and before that, through the occupation of Beirut. Continuing with the policy of imposition is unacceptable, and the state of statelessness must end for institutions to be restored and the country rebuilt," Sassine said in an interview with MTV.
Sassine asserted that the Kataeb Party did not reject the initiative of the National Moderation Bloc; rather, it had a set of questions regarding some details, such as who issues the invitation, where the discussion will take place, and who will lead the discussions.
"At the same time, the most crucial aspect, in case a dialogue occurs, is whether there are guarantees to ensure the convening of a presidential election session followed by consecutive sessions, securing a full quorum for electing a president. No one has been able to provide answers to our questions, and the initiative of the National Moderation Bloc has not materialized. It remained merely an initiative that did not take a positive direction," he explained.
Sassine pointed out that the Shiite duo is the one obstructing the presidential elections, saying that there is a major battle occurring in the Middle East revolving around the Iranian nuclear program or Iranian ambitions.
"Iranian proxies are being utilized to achieve goals, among which Hezbollah is one. The results of what is happening in Gaza and the south are among these proxies. There is talk about ending the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, but is it in the interest of Hezbollah to have a negotiating president, whether regarding UNSC Resolution 1701 or otherwise?" he went on saying.
He believed that Hezbollah is the primary negotiator and wants to impose a president of its choosing.
Regarding the resilience of the opposition, he stated: "It is fulfilling its role and rejecting anything that is not in Lebanon's interest. Its role is to demand the application of the constitution according to principles and regulations. If others try to impose something, if they were able to impose a president, they would have done so a year ago. If they were capable of doing what they wanted, they would have ignored the opposition."
