Sayegh: A Mission-Oriented President is Key to Enforcing International Decisions

Kataeb Lawmaker Selim Sayegh emphasized that the arrangements taking place in southern Lebanon must be safeguarded by a clear and independent political decision from Beirut, starting with the election of a president; a head of state who, along with the government, protects Lebanon's borders and upholds sovereignty over all its territories.

In an interview with Voice of Lebanon, Sayegh pointed out that recent developments necessitate a fresh perspective on Lebanese politics.

He noted: "The opposition is taking steps to assume the political initiative, as it is their responsibility not to remain in a passive position. Accordingly, we have intensified our communications within the opposition and beyond. What is required today is a decisive move toward electing a president with character and credibility; someone who inspires trust, implements UNSC Resolution 1701, enforces the ceasefire, and initiates the political process to restore Lebanon’s institutions and alliances."

When asked about the opposition’s meeting with French envoy Jean-Yves Le Drian, Sayegh explained: "Le Drian's visit is part of efforts to reinforce the ceasefire, reactivate institutions, and push for the election of a president. We did not discuss specific candidacies with him. Instead, we drew certain conclusions from our discussions with international envoys and ambassadors."

"These nations seek stable and transparent relations with Lebanon, a sentiment we relayed to Le Drian, who agreed. We made it clear that we want a president with the qualities necessary to be an active leader—not a passive bystander to events outside Baabda Palace, but a decision-maker who implements international resolutions and takes the initiative, rather than serving as a tool in the hands of political forces," he added.

"We, as the opposition, have new ideas and firm positions. We will not accept a compromise president who lacks identity and vision," he concluded.
