Sayegh Praises PM's Commitment to Reactivating Qlayaat Airport

Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam visited Qlayaat Airport on Tuesday, reaffirming his commitment to reopen the facility within a year. This promise follows a longstanding call by Kataeb MP Salim Sayegh, who has consistently highlighted the need for "alternative airports" in Lebanon, particularly in Hamat, Qlayaat, and Riyaq, to foster balanced regional development and prevent the country from becoming isolated on the global stage.

“At the outset of the war that Hezbollah launched in support of Gaza, I called for the opening of Rene Mouawad Airport, Qlayaat Airport, and Hamat Airport,” Sayegh wrote on X. “I made these calls in Parliament, in the media, and through official channels, repeatedly sending inquiries to former Minister of Public Works Ali Hamieh."

The lawmaker emphasized that his goal was to ensure Lebanon remained connected internationally while promoting equitable development across all regions of the country. However, at the time, his efforts were met with accusations of promoting division.

Sayegh hailed Prime Minister Salam's recent pledge to reopen Qlayaat Airport as a positive step, saying that it marks a shift towards more pragmatic leadership.

“Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, with his commitment to opening the airport, clears any doubt and shows he is a statesman of the highest caliber with a clear, strategic vision,” Sayegh said.

He further noted that Salam’s approach represented a break from Lebanon’s traditional power-sharing politics, highlighting the importance of a unified, forward-thinking leadership.

Sayegh also underscored the need for comprehensive infrastructure development and improved regional connectivity in Lebanon, advocating for a balanced and inclusive approach that serves the needs of all regions, not just the capital.
