A senior Hamas commander was killed in an Israeli airstrike in the coastal Lebanese city of Sidon overnight, the Israeli military announced on Friday.
Hassan Farhat, who led Hamas’s forces in the western sector of Lebanon, was targeted in an Israeli strike that hit an apartment building in the southern port city.
Two members of Farhat's family were also killed in the strike, local Lebanese media reported.
A Lebanese security official told Xinhua news agency that "an Israeli drone fired two air-to-ground missiles at an apartment in the Al-Zahraa neighborhood in central Sidon, where the Hamas leader Hassan Farhat was residing."
"The strike caused a fire in the apartment, resulting in the deaths of Farhat and his two sons," said the official.
The Israeli army accused Farhat of orchestrating multiple attacks on Israeli civilians and military personnel during the ongoing conflict. The military said he was responsible for a rocket strike on the Northern Command base in Safed on February 14, 2024, which killed Staff Sgt. Omer Sarah Benjo and wounded several other soldiers.
“The terrorist was involved in advancing terror attacks against the State of Israel in recent months, and his activities constituted a threat to the State of Israel and its citizens,” the Israeli military said in a statement.
