The United States is exploring new ways to bolster the Lebanese Armed Forces and is in talks with the Lebanese government over tailored economic support, according to U.S. State Department spokesperson Sam Werberg.
In remarks made to LBCI from Riyadh, Werberg said Washington remains committed to strengthening Lebanon’s military institutions, which he described as essential to national sovereignty.
“The Lebanese Army must assert control over every inch of Lebanese territory,” Werberg said, emphasizing the U.S. view that the army plays a central role in preserving internal stability.
He added that talks are ongoing with Beirut to identify economic support mechanisms suited to the country’s worsening financial crisis. The U.S., he noted, is maintaining daily, consistent communication with Lebanese officials and is closely tracking developments under the new president and government.
“There are fundamental changes underway in Lebanon,” he said.
Werberg spoke from the Saudi capital as U.S. President Donald Trump arrived on a four-day tour aimed at deepening cooperation with Gulf allies, including Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates.
He said Trump’s meetings in the Gulf will focus on regional security, economic partnerships, social development, and advancements in artificial intelligence.
The war in Gaza will also be high on the agenda. Werberg confirmed that Trump is expected to discuss the ongoing conflict with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, while U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff continues parallel diplomatic efforts with Qatar and Egypt to broker a ceasefire.
“Coordination with our regional partners remains central to our approach,” Werberg said.
“President Trump follows an ‘America First’ approach and will defend U.S. interests above all," he stressed.
