Head of the Kataeb’s Economic and Social Council Jean Tawile on Tuesday blamed the political authority for its destructive and obstructive logic, emphasizing that constitutional, legal, and financial regularity requires the activation of institutions’ work at all levels.
“Unfortunately, in light of this exceptional situation that no legislator could have expected to happen, we have reached the lowest level of political, economic, and financial deterioration. According to the law, when there is a red notice issued for Lebanon's Central Bank governor, it is the government's right to dismiss him under the Code of Money and Credit, then the first deputy governor will take over until a new governor is appointed,” Tawile said in an interview with Nidaa Al Watan newspaper.
“According to the political system, Nabih Berri does not want to assume the duties of first deputy governor. As for the appointment, there are Lebanese figures who have excellent qualifications to take over the position and contribute to establishing a sound monetary policy, reaching an agreement with the International Monetary Fund, and improving governance in the financial and monetary authority,” he pointed out.
“The political authority even before the crisis has not had any intention of carrying out reforms because they harm its interests, even if it is at the expense of the Lebanese people and depositors. Any new governor should restructure and monitor the banking sector,” he stressed.
Tawile believed that there are common interests between the political and banking authorities, saying that monetary policy is being used for political and personal goals.
“The most prominent example is the use and management of the Sayrafa platform for special interests,” he explained.
"As for the fate of Riad Salameh, I think that not all the political class is on the same boat. Deputy Prime Minister Saade Chami is calling for the resignation of Salameh, while Berri wants to postpone this matter even if it would lead to a crisis. There are those who want to take the right path and solve the crisis properly. Let’s wait and see,” he said.
“There are several scenarios, either asking for his resignation to be replaced by the Deputy Governor, which is what "Hezbollah" prefers, or some want to keep him in his position until the end of his term, which is a challenge, or he will resign and a replacement will be appointed," he concluded.
