UNIFIL Decries Attacks on Peacekeepers as 'Unacceptable,' Demands Lebanese Authorities Step In

A United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) patrol came under attack Monday morning in southern Lebanon when a group of individuals in civilian clothing attempted to block its movement by force, the peacekeeping mission said in a statement.

The incident took place in the vicinity of Hallusiyat al Tahta during a planned patrol that had been coordinated in advance with the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF). According to UNIFIL, the group used “aggressive means,” including throwing stones at the peacekeepers. One peacekeeper was struck, but no injuries were reported.

“In response, UNIFIL personnel employed non-lethal measures to ensure the safety of both the patrol members and those present,” the mission said, without elaborating on the type of measures used.

The Lebanese army was immediately informed and arrived on the scene shortly afterward. The situation was quickly brought under control, and the patrol was able to resume its operations.

UNIFIL condemned the incident and reiterated that freedom of movement is essential to fulfilling its mandate in line with UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which ended the 2006 war between Israel and Hezbollah.

“Freedom of movement is a core requirement for the implementation of UNIFIL’s mandate. This includes the ability to operate independently and impartially,” the statement read. “Any restriction on this freedom — while conducting operational activities with or without LAF — constitutes a violation of that resolution.”

The mission also called on Lebanese authorities to take firm action to prevent such incidents in the future.

“It is unacceptable that UNIFIL peacekeepers continue to be targeted,” the statement said. “UNIFIL calls on the Lebanese authorities to take all necessary measures to ensure that its peacekeepers can carry out their duties without obstruction or threat.”

Lebanon's Foreign Ministry issued a strong condemnation of an attack targeting a UNIFIL peacekeeper, stressing the urgent need to protect the safety and security of UN personnel and their vehicles.

In an official statement, the ministry called for those responsible for the assault to be held accountable, underscoring that such actions violate both Lebanese and international laws.

The statement also reiterated Lebanon’s steadfast support for UNIFIL’s role, emphasizing the importance of the mission’s mandate and tasks as outlined under UN Security Council Resolution 1701.
