The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) has uncovered nearly 300 hidden weapons caches across southern Lebanon, all of which were reported to the Lebanese Armed Forces, who then proceeded to seize the arms.
In comments made to Al-Hadath news channel, UNIFIL noted that while Hezbollah continues to enjoy the sympathy of many local residents, there is growing frustration and fatigue evident among communities in the south.
Speaking Thursday at a ceremony in Naqoura to commemorate the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers, UNIFIL head Aroldo Lázaro Saenz cautioned that the situation remains highly volatile along the Blue Line.
"Any mistake could lead to dire consequences," Lazaro said, warning of the risks posed by escalating friction along the border.
According to a statement issued by UNIFIL, Lazaro emphasized that “the path to peace in southern Lebanon is a political one, and we must all work to create the proper conditions for a sustainable and long-term solution.”
Lazaro also welcomed the recent deployment of additional units from the Lebanese Army in the region.
"Their presence must be maintained, as they are the sole guarantor of the state's authority and security,” he stated. “Therefore, it is essential for international partners to continue providing support.”
