The United States is monitoring developments in Beirut’s Karantina district with “serious concern,” amid growing unease over how the Lebanese government has handled plans to establish a displacement center in the area.
According to MTV Lebanon, Washington is alarmed that any hesitation or lack of a decisive response could be interpreted as tacit approval of attempts to reposition forces or establish a security presence in the district; moves it considers entirely unacceptable.
Sources say the U.S. views the Karantina situation as a dangerous indicator of escalating tensions, with concerns that Hezbollah may be seeking to extend its influence over displaced populations near Beirut’s port. The area is considered highly sensitive, and officials warn that any attempt to impose a new status quo could further destabilize the local environment.
“The American administration is watching closely,” the report said, noting that developments in Karantina are seen as a potential signal of Hezbollah’s expansion and control efforts, which could exacerbate regional instability.
